Since 1927, every other year a match is contested between a team from Europe and a team from the United States, played at a venue which alternates between Europe and the U.S.  The 3 day event, named after Samual Ryder who donated the trophy, is scored on a point system where winning a match is worth one point, a draw worth a half of a point, and the first to 14.5 points wins.
