Patrick Cantlay did Patrick Cantlay in East Lake. All weekend long in Atlanta, he hit green after green and sunk putt after putt and ultimately came out as the winner of the TOUR Championship, and the winner of the $15 million bonus. If you’ve been watching the playoffs at all, this really isn’t much of a surprise, he’s been playing lights out for 3 weeks straight.
This was no easy task though. Despite starting with a (minimum) two stroke lead over the rest of the field, he had all the usual suspects right at his tail. Rahm, JT, Bryson certainly gave him a run for his money, but at the end of Sunday, came up short. What’s crazy to think is had Rahm had not been forced to withdraw from the Memorial back in May, where he had a massive lead on the rest of the field and went on to win the tournament, he would have earned another 500 FedEx Cup points. Had he received those points, he would have started the TOUR Championship at 8-under and not 6-under. He finished one stroke back from Cantlay at East Lake, meaning that forced WD in Columbus, costed him probably $12 million in earrings roughly. Crazy, right?
But that’s golf and that’s why we love the game. It almost always comes down to one swing, one putt, one stroke that’s the difference between winning big and that famous saying “There’s always next year.” And for Rahm, there’s definitely next year. He’s an absolute machine, still very young and there’s not a doubt in my mind we’ll be seeing him snag another major next year and be in contention for the big end of year bonus.
So that’s all folks, the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season has come to an end, but there’s more. Now it’s Ryder Cup time! Remember if you have any questions about attending this year at Whistling Straights, let us know.
